Intellectual Property not only refers to copyrights. Intellectual property are trademarks, trade secrets, patents and copyrights.

What it means and refers to is the rights people have over something original they create so that they are able to make money on their unique creation and motivated to do so. If people did not reap rewards for creating or inventing something new and unique there would be less motivation to do so and technology (and the flow of new information) would progress at a slower pace.
