More than one crore families in Karnataka have been identified as those living Below Poverty Line (BPL), against the National Sample Survey report to Planning Commission of 31.29 families, Karnataka Legislative Council was informed here today.
In a written reply, Karnataka minister for Food and Civil Supplies, H G Halappa, informed that government had issued 1,00,78,231 temporary BPL cards till the end of June this year while 5,90,363 families were given permanent BPL cards.
The minister also informed the House that according to a survey conducted by the state government in 2005 the number of families identified as BPL families was about 78.24 lakhs. An appeal has been issued to the Centre to declare these families under BPL category.
He said during the distribution of temporary ration cards it was also noticed that some ineligible families had received BPL cards and added action would be initiated against such families for misleading the government.
