WIPO, or World Intellectual Property Organization publishes a statistical report of the patent activities around the globe every year. In its 2006 report. WIPO ranks India in the lowest 2 or 3 in almost every imaginable category for the patent statistics.
Whether it is the number of patents filed per million residents, number of patents vs GDP, number of patents vs research efforts, India lags not just behind all the major nations, we practically rank the last in almost every category.
Why talk of going to the moon, or overtaking USA in 2050, or having 3 dozen billionaires? We are SO FAR behind in innovation, inventions and intellectual property ownership, that in a few decades we will be paying through our noses to these same countries that we think we are overtaking today.
