2....I went to the temple.

2: to a specific temple like Ganesha, Shiva, Vitthal & also the location is known.

The Difference is :-
The First sentence tells about that you went any temple.
The Second sentence is incomplete but it is just showing that you went to the Specific Temple. But It is just showing not in actual, Because it is incomplete sentence.
