Republic day - 26th January, 1950 - the day India ceased to be a Dominion of the British Empire, meaning the head of state was our President and not the Governor -General. It was also the day on which our Constitution came into effect.
Independence Day - 15th August 1947 - The day power was transferred from the Crown to the People of India. In other words India's was freed from foreign rule BUT we were still a dominion. Meaning the British Constitution was our Constitution and the King of England was our Head of state and he was represented by a Governor General.

India achieved independence from colonial rule on August 15, 1947. August 15 is, therefore, celebrated every year as the anniversary of our Independence Day. After attaining independence, a Constituent Assembly was set up to draft a constitution for the country. This constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, when India became a Republic. January 26 is, therefore, celebrated as the anniversary of India's Republic Day.

The Republic Day is an occasion to project India's strengths, its cultural heritage and its sense of unity in diversity.

Traditionally, the celebrations start with an address to the nation by the President of India on the eve of the Republic Day. On the morning of January 26, the president reviews a parade in New Delhi in which different wings of the Indian armed and paramilitary forces participate.

This is followed by groups of children and then folk dances and performances from states throughout the country.

Similar celebrations are carried out a ...more

Republic Day is to commemorate the day when they first became republics. The Republic Day of India (Hindi: Gantantra Divas) is a national holiday of India to mark the transition of India from a British Dominion to a republic on January 26, 1950 and the adoption of the Constitution of India.

An Independence Day is an annual celebration commemorating the anniversary of a nation's assumption of independent statehood, usually after ceasing to be a colony or part of another state OR country. India's Independence Day (Hindi: Swatantrata Divas) is celebrated on August 15 to commemorate its independence from British rule and its birth as a sovereign nation on that day in 1947.
