What is difference between Percentage and percentile ?

1.

A percentage is simple and states what you got out of hundred. A percentile gives your position among all those who appeared e.g. If I scored 70 percent and lets. say 1000 people appeared for the test and 400 scored below this percent then I'm in the 40 percentile bracket. This is the major determinator in high density admission tests. the cut-off percentile is very high...as much as 99 sometimes.

Percentile means how many people are lagging behind you out of 100.

Percentage : 1) A proportion in relation to a whole (which is usually the amount per hundred). 2) Assets belongingto or due to or contributed by an individual person or group. Percentile : 1) (statistics) any of the 99 numbered points that divide an ordered set of scores into 100 parts each of which contains one-hundredth of the total.

Percentage refers to what portion of a group of 100 fall into a category.for example '10 percent of students passed'.although percentile is based on percentage but it is more "statiscal' in nature for example 'he is in the top 10 percentile in the passing students.
