IST is ahead of GMt by 5 hours and 30 minutes. Add 1 hour for every 15 degrees of Longitude to the east of Greenwich, London and reduce 1 hour for every 15 degrees to the west of that line. IST is for Kolkata and is valid through out India.

GMT (known as Greenwich Mean Time) is in force in the UK between 26th October and 28th March. It is behind IST by 5 hours and 30 minutes. Currently BST (British Summer Time) is in force instead and is behind IST by 4 hours and 30 minutes.

GMT is the short form of GREENWHICH MEAN TIME, that is the time which is treated to be the centrally located place on the earth and O degree longitude. Ths IST is also known as the Indian Standard Time, which is 82.5 degrees east of Greenwhich, and each degree is measured by 4 minutes. Which shows that IST should be 5.5 hours earlier than G M T. The Longitude of 82.5 degree runs throught allahabad.

GMT summer time is four and half hour behind us. And during the Day Light saving, it is 5 and half hours behind us. To calculate, the best way is to subtract the time difference from the present IST. Alternatively you can use different time converter available in the net, like www.timaanddate.com

The difference between GMT and IST is +5:30:05 hours.
GMT is understood for Greenwich Mean Time, calculated in United Kingdom, Royal Observatory at Greenwich.
IST is India Standard Time. Which is calculated in Allahabad observatory in Mirzapur (Uttar Pardesh) in India. Its Longitude is 82.5 degree East.
