It was a prudent decision. Both Sehwag and Murli Vijay had failed in both the innings of the first test at Chennai. And in the dyeing moment of the day, when players are tired also, a quick wicket or two was the distinct possibility with the pace attack at the disposal of the Aussies. Such things have happened before. And also all the recognized batsmen of Aussies had departed, with only No. 10 and 11 left. They would not have added too many to the score. So it was all worth it.

India has a bad history against playing pace when challenged in the last session.. A new swinging ball at late playing hours can demoralize a batsman.. Once west Indies had taken our 3 wickets for 0 runs.. Clarke probably wanted to repeat the history. He had nothing to lose and only to gain.. what is addition of 5 or 6 runs in comparison to some early wickets?

Probably Michael Clarke knew it was no use playing further. A good decision, I guess.
