India is not a Communist country where everything is done by govt and the citizens are only workers who are given salary.
India is also not a Socialist country where, even though private enterprise is encouraged but govt keeps also participates in business activities to a great extent through PSUs. Prioir to 1991 India was a socialist country under Nehru's socialistic regime. It proved to be counter productive and in India, from Industry to Agriculture both became stagnant and private enterprise was given total protection from foreign competition. That resulted in stagnation in innovative ideas and things were in a bad shape.
In 1991 when MMS became the Finance Minister under PV Narsimha Rao PMship, they discarded Nehruvian Socialism and brought openness and free market policy in the country and that paved the way to progress which we all boast of today. These reforms are not taking place at a faster pace and that is the cause of most of the ills the country is facing today.
