A food chain shows the feeding relationship between different living things in a particular environment or habitat. Often, a plant will begin a food chain because it can make its own food using energy from the sun. Also, a food chain represents a series of events in which food and energy are transferred from one organism in an ecosystem to another. Food chains show how energy is passed from the sun to producers, from producers to consumers, and from consumers to decomposers.

One example of a food chain is the animals living in, around, and near a freshwater lake. Osprey (Fish eagles) feed on Northern pike (fish), which in turn feed on Perch (fish) which eat Bleak (a type of Carp, which is a fish) that feed on Freshwater Shrimps. The primary producers of this food chain are most likely autotrophic phytoplankton, which use the sun's energy to produce their own food.

2nd Answerer says: A food chain is a linear series of links starting with one specific species that eats no other species in the web, and endling with a specific species that eaten by no other species in the web. That's different from a food web.

A food chain is the sequence of who eats whom in a biological community (an ecosystem) to obtain nutrition. A food chain starts with the primary energy source, usually the sun or boiling-hot deep sea vents. The next link in the chain is an organism that make its own food from the primary energy source -- an example is photosynthetic plants that make their own food from sunlight (using a process called photosynthesis) and chemosynthetic bacteria that make their food energy from chemicals in hydrothermal vents.
Eg. Grass-> grasshopper -> rat -> snake -> Hawk

Starts with Plankton, little 'plants' found in seas and oceans. Plankton is eaten by other ltlle sea creatures who are eaten by bigger creatures who in turn are eaten by yet other bigger beings ... and thus it goes on and on ... a chain is formed.
