A set-top box (STB) or set-top unit (STU) is a device that connects to a television and an external source of signal, turning the signal into content which is then displayed on the television screen or other display device.

Coaxial cables were designed to solve a problem with the transmission of high-frequency radio signals. Information load increases with frequency, so RF was the practical vehicle for high volume long distance communications. These transmissions are line-of-sight signals that attenuate rapidly and escape into space--coaxial cable confines the signal to the cable interior and makes efficient transmission to any location possible.

Along the length of the coaxial cable, part of the transmitted signal will be lost or attenuated. A small percent may escape the cable's shielding, and more will be converted to heat. The higher the frequency, the greater the losses. For long-distance transmissions, repeater stations are necessary for amplifying and retransmitting weake ...more

Look dear, our TV set is made to receive only three type of signal Very Low Frequency, Very High Frequency and Ultra High Frequency. If there is other signal which is provide on Ku Band (very strong signal), then there is need to have a signal converter called set top box.

Well, set top box is a satellite receiver and it has work only to receive the signal and amplify the signal coz when any signal transmitted to satellite which is more than 36,000 Km away from the earth and when it comes back to the earth the receiving signal become weak. A set top box amplifies and converts it into either Ultra High Frequency or High Definition Signal (as per our requirement).

So, whenever you want to buy a set top box 1st u have to decide that there are two types of set top boxes are available 1st is general and another is HD may be with DVR (digital video recorder). The cost of set top box is starting from Rs.880 to Rs.7,500.

But as my suggestion is with the comparison of cable TV, Video a ...more
