The Carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) test is used to check how well treatment is working in certain types of cancers. The CEA test measures the amount of CEA protein that may appear in the blood of some people who have certain kinds of cancers, especially large intestine (Colon and Rectal) cancer. It may also be found in people with other cancers of the pancreas, breast, ovary, or lung. The CEA test is often used after surgery to check carcinoembryonic antigen levels.

CEA stands for carcinoembryonic antigen. CEA is a type of protein molecule that can be found in many different cells of the body, but is typically associated with certain tumors and the developing fetus.
CEA is most frequently tested in blood. It can also be tested in body fluids and in biopsy tissue.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion. It is normally produced during fetal development, but the production of CEA stops before birth. Therefore, it is not usually present in the blood of healthy adults, although levels are raised in heavy smokers. CEA is a glycosyl phosphatidyl inositol (GPI)-cell surface anchored glycoprotein whose specialized sialofucosylated glycoforms serve as functional colon carcinoma L-selectin and E-selectin ligands, which may be critical to the metastatic dissemination of colon carcinoma cells

Carcinoembryonic Antigen : When CEA levels are initially elevated and then decrease to normal after therapy, it means the cancer has been successfully treated. A steadily rising CEA level is often the first sign of tumor recurrence.
