Well, I am not certain that my answer will match what you have in mind, but I remember one incident which might throw some light on his requirement from the Lyricist. When Poet Pradeep was engaged for "Sambandh" alongwith O P Naiyyar, they sat for the First Trial and Pradeepji in his inimitable style made him listen his songs by singing them in a way he thought gave fluency to his words. O P was very much annoyed and complained to the Producer that if the Lyricist had made the Tunes of the songs, where was the need of a Music Director. Pradeepji politely explained him his position that he always wrote anything after he could sing his lines in a fluent way, and OP was free to put them in any tune he liked. OP was convinced and we all know the result in the form of immortal melodies like "Chal Akela.." " Tumko to karodon saal huye..." " Andhere mein jo baithey hain..." etc. This incident can be interpreted as OPs desire to have his songs written upon his tunes only and that is quite evi ...more

Majrooh Sultanpuri and Sahir Ludhianvi wrote some memorable lyrics for some of O.P.'s earlier compositions such as in Naya Daur. However, generally keeping clear of established song writers of his time, O.P. experimented with different upcoming lyricists like Jan Nisar Akhtar, Qamar Jalalabadi, Shamshul Huda Bihari, and Ahmed Wasi, who tried to write the lyrics that would match the sensuous tunes which O.P. would have in his mind. In the tradition of the great composers in India, O.P. was fond of the poetic flourish of the Urdu language for his more serious songs.

Thanks for such a rare question.
Now don't tell me I am violating guidelines.
I have replied your question without knowing the answer because I was such a blind fan of OP Nayyar that I never bother to know any inside story other than he had soft corner for Asha Didi.
Namaste.
