To reply your question, one needs to go into the concept of God and religion. The three major religions of the world are Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. Unless these religions were great, so many people would not become their followers and also these religions would not have survived for thousands of years. Basically all these religions teach their followers how to serve God and all the religions have spelt it out in a very simple, short and sweet way as below: -

Islam proclaims My(Allahs) mercy (love) embraces everything
Hinduism teaches He who loves living beings, serves God.
Unfortunately, other side of the coin is Crusade, Jihad and Dharma-yudhya.
Crusade is meant for saving Christianity from external aggression and yet it was used to occupy the land of Muslims.
