ASO= anti-streptolysin o antibodies.streptolysin o is a toxin that is formed and released by strep pyogenes (the organism that causes strep throat).
if you are no longer exhibiting strep throat symptoms, but the doctors want to know if had strep throat recently (there can be complications if you had it and didn't get treatment) they will order an aso titer.
they are just quantitating (finding out how much) your anti-streptolysin o antibodies are.

This is a serologic test, known as anti-streptolysin O. It measures the quantity of antibody to a component of streptococcal bacteria.
