ABN AMRO - In the 1960s, the Nederlandse Handelmaatschappij (Dutch Trading Society; 1824) & the Twentsche Bank merged to form the Algemene Bank Nederland (ABN; General Bank of the Netherlands). In 1966, the Amsterdamsche Bank & the Rotterdamsche Bank merged to form the Amro Bank. In 1991, ABN & AMRO Bank merged to form ABN AMRO. ABN AMRO was acquired by the consortium of Fortis, RBS and Santander in October 2007. The combination of consortium businesses with ABN AMRO will result in an enhanced market presence, strengthened products and growth prospects. This will deliver benefits to customers, who will gain from the increased scale and efficiency of the businesses. ABN AMRO Holding is a Dutch treat for Royal Bank of Scotland, Fortis, and Banco Santander, which bought the leading bank in the Netherlands for E71 billion in 2007 -- the largest deal in European history.
