among the total number of companies regd in the share market when more no. of share companies are advancing the mkt rises..nd viceversa... sometimes major shares are of a particular company.. so by their influence too the mkt can go down or up.. sensitive index.... (sensex) and its most capitalised by 30 major comapnies which comes around 1/5th of the total shares
