Erstwhile actors had the panache to attract people. They used to exhibit charm & mannerisms attributed to their personalities and the type of films being made at that time. Today's films are more of action / dance oriented movies which demand actors to exhibit strength, flexibility and knowledge of dance and moves. Hence on that count, the current set of actors cannot be compared to the old actors. If we answer the second question of your, since the older movies were more moral and dialogue based they required more acting skills hence the old actors are on the better side of acting as compared to the current lot.

The period to which old actors belonged was comparatively simple, dominated by family values trying to teach lessons to transform families to better ones. But nowadays things have drastically changed and the family values are begining to be overlooked to certain extent. And so now certain actors are shown as self-centered as was not in old actors.A grand change has already crept into the present-day actors.

Dont compare apple with oranges. yesteryear actor had their own charm and talent. They dint have the luxury of electronic media or modern PR technique. Their talent made fan queue for them. They seldom had any commerical motives beyond cinema..
