Mahabaleshwar is related to a mythological story of Ravan taking Atmalinga from Lord Shiva as a gift and on way back to Lanka, Maharshi Narada duped him for evening prayers, then ravana handed over Atmalinga to Lord Ganesha in the guise of a brahmin boy at Mahabaleshwar. Before Ravan returned from prayers, Ganesh installed Atmalinga on ground. Inspite of every effort of Ravana to lift shivalinga he failed, that's why the name is Mahabaleshwara. It has another name Gokarnam.
