The Union of the Soviet Socialist REpublics.
Noone stood by India more than the sturdy ol' USSR.
When we started our 1971 Bangladesh war, we were supposed to get pincer bombed by US 5th fleet, but the Soviets dispatched submarines armed w/ nuclear missiles to chase off the US task force, and thus we could win a clean victory in 1971 war. WOuld the US use nuclear force deterence in our favour? YEAH RIGHT!
SOviet Union was our chief arms supplier and defense broker, yet when we opted for Sea Harrier planes from the UK instead of YAK-141 Forger aircrafts, the Soviets NEVER imposed ANY sanctions on us.
When the Soviet Union gave our industry purchase orders, they paid cash in advance and didn't put a 180 day credit supply burden on a struggling Indian company.
It was more obvious than water than although India was "officially" NAM, we were USSR allies. Yet when we brokered independent deals w/ US and UK, the Soviets never intruded. Look at US and West on comparison when ...more
