Is file-sharing akin to piracy? Why were the owners of Pirate Bay, a file-sharing site jailed?

I think, Pirate Bay owners were uploading on to their site material where copyrights were in force, which included music scores, video, TV shows over which they had no free right of usage. It is almost akin to the sale of the pirated DVDs of new releases. The damage it does to the producers, owners and distributors is tremendous. Just as one can watch a movie at home which would have otherwise cost close to Rs. 1000 for a family of four, here they are more easily available thus hitting the sale of the original legal CDs and DVDs.

If we are to look at it in a puritan way, it is nothing less than an outright theft.

From what I read on the net, the Swedish Court has sentenced them all to a year in jail and close to 900 Thousand Pounds each in fine. No wonder, this is being treated as a landmark judgment and celebrated by the entertainment industry. Sharing a file containing copyrighted material without paying the proper royalty is of course piracy, by all means. Well, one can challenge the entire concept of copyright on good art from a humanist point of view, but yet, the existing law and its scopes doesn\'t change.

The owners of this site were jailed primarily because they aided and abetted piracy, while making money out of such an act.

I always thought the name \"The Pirate Bay\" was about keeping Pirates at Bay :))
