The Catskills and Adirondacks are in New York State. The Catskills are to the South of Albany and the Adirondacks are to the North of Albany. The Appalachians are further south starting with the Allegheny range in Pennsylvania and going South. Mount Marcy at 5,344 feet above sea level in the Adirondack Mountains of Essex County is the highest mountain in the state
