The Bill was approved on Thursday by the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Bill has been prepared on the recommendations of the Law Commission as well as the Supreme Court that "irretrievable breakdown of marriage"should be incorporated as "another ground for grant of divorce".
Welcoming this move, Jyotsna Chatterji, director of the Joint Women's Programme said: "This will make it possible for couples who have decided on divorce by mutual consent to be granted a swift divorce. It will help prevent the retractions, lies, etc. which happens in case of long delays."Chatterji who has earlier worked on the amendment to the Indian Divorce Act, added:
"There is the probability that the woman becomes the sufferer as Indian society doesn't take too kindly to single women and that too divorced."

From the Hindu code Bills of the 1950s to the latest amendment of the marriage laws, the emphasis has been on simplifying procedures and empowering women. The emphasis, therefore, in the earlier and the latest laws has been on ensuring property rights for women and facilitating the process of divorce. It was on the question of divorce that B R Ambedkar resigned from the Cabinet since he felt that the government was too conservative. Not surprisingly, the new amendments in this regard have caused a controversy by allowing the judiciary to waive the six-month cooling off period before allowing the husband and wife to part ways.
Although irretrievable breakdown has been mentioned as the justification for such a waiver, it is patently a concession to the impatience of individuals and the fast pace of life, which are typical features of the modern times.
