Read Only Memory
ROM chips contain information that you typically cannot change, known as non-volatile memory. Essential to the computer's boot-up process, ROM chips are relatively simple compared to RAM. Some newer kinds of ROM chips, such as EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory), allow a manufacturer to program instructions one time before becoming permanent memory. You can erase EPROM's data by using a special ultraviolet light, allowing you to program new instructions. Unlike other changeable kinds of memory, though, ROM still remains an all-or-nothing affair, requiring complete deletion for any kind of change. If your ROM chip doesn't support erasure, it cannot change at all.
