The tradition of celebrating Friendship Day began in 1935 when the US Congress decided to dedicate a day in the honor of friends. Though it is not known exactly what were the reasons that went into the making of this day, the retrospection of the world scenario of those times can lead us to an understanding. With the devastating effects of the First World War still showing and increasing hostilities, mistrust and hatred between countries providing the perfect conditions for another imminent battle, there was a greater need for friendship and camaraderie not only among nations but also among individuals.

Without going into the mundane details which can be searched on google, let me give you my thought about it.
THE BASIC REASON WHY WE CELEBRATE SUCH DAYS IS THAT WE ARE ALL SO BUSY WITH SELF AND OUR SET GOALS IN LIFE, THAT WE FORGET, IGNORE, HAVE TO BE REMINDED OF WHAT IS A BEAUTIFUL FEELING.
THE FEELING FOR OTHER HUMANS, OF OUR CLOSE ONES, OF OUR FRIENDS.

ITS NOT ASKING FOR TOO MUCH TO SPARE ONE DAY OR A FEW MOMENTS OF IT, TO REMEMBER ALL THOSE WHO CARE FOR US---OUR FRIENDS.
BUT WE STILL NEED TO BE REMINDED.
HENCE A DAY HAS BEEN MARKED OUT SEPARATELY AS FRIENDSHIP DAY.

Human beings are social creatures and have always valued the importance of friends in their lives. To celebrate this noble feeling it was deemed fit to have a day dedicated to friends and friendship. Accordingly, first Sunday of August was declared as a holiday in US in honor of friends by a Proclamation made by US Congress in 1935. Since then, World Friendship Day is being celebrated every year on the first Sunday in the month of August.
