There is only one species of lion, Panthera leo. There are currently 7 recognised subspecies, all of which are found in Africa with the exception of the the Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica). This means any of the 6 other subspecies can be called African lions, but there is no one subspecies called 'the African lion'. The 6 African subspecies are the Masai or East African lion (Panthera leo nubica), the West African lion (Panthera leo sengalensis), the Northeast Congo lion (Panthera leo azandica), the Southwest African or Katanga lion (Panthera leo bleyenberghi), the Southeast African, Kruger or Transvaal lion (Panthera leo krugeri), and the Barbary lion (Panthera leo leo) - this subspecies is extinct in the wild, but still exists in zoos. The extinct Cape lion, often classified as Panthera leo melanochaita, is now considered unlikely to have been a subspecies in its own right - it was more likely simply a southern population of the Kruger lion.
