Bases purely on what they wear on their shoulders... its something like this:
Lt Gen= DGP
Maj Gen= IGP
Brig= DIG
Lt Col= SSP
Maj= SP
Capt= ASP
But this whole so called "equivalence" is flawed as there is no established relativity between army and police ranks. The Indian police services went in for a unilateral upgradation of their rank badges in the 1950s and a DIG started wearing rank insignia similar to a Brigadier of the Indian Army. This was done entirely in-house for the police service's own cadre management reasons and should not form the basis of claiming equivalence with the armed forces. ...more
