This type of ceremony is carried out mostly by branhmins in our country and not by all. This is carried out as per the procedures laid down in the books and shastras written by Maha Rishies. While giving pinda daan one has to perform the ceremony in a particular manner by recalling the dead forefathers .i.e. father, grand father and great grand father of the performer. Those who believe in it perform. else it is not necessary. It is said that if you perform PINDA DAAN in GAYA (BIHAR) under VATA VRIKSHA (TREE), one need not perform every year. No one sees whether the fore fathers get moksha or not after performance of pinda daan. Do any daan on that day is also enough according to some people. THIS IS PURELY BASED ON BELIEF AND BELIEF ONLY. Non believers have nothing to do with this type of custom. There are many daans which we all have to do daily from whatever we earn daily/monthly/yearly. Are we doing it? There are some who are strictly following this type of daan daily. ie 10% of t ...more

We are not doing for their Moksha post.Shraddh is performed for three generations of Pitris (the father, the grand-father and the great grand-father), or to all Pitris. and is performed every year on the anniversary of the death Shradh can be performed on every New Moon day or Amavasya..Three cakes are offered to the father, grand-father and great grand-father. Gifts to deserving Brahmins (priests) for the benefit of the Pitris, in the proper time and place and with faith, are known as Shraddh. Shraddh gives satisfaction to the Pitris. Performance of Shraddh and Tarpan (libations of water) relieves the hunger and thirst of the departed soul during its journey to the Pitri Loka. By the offering of the Shraddh, the son helps his father to dwell in joy with the Pitris. The rites that the son should perform for his father are known as Sapindi shradh. Funeral rites and Shraddh must be distinguished from each other. Funeral rites (antyeshthi) are amangal (inauspicious) while Shraddh are mang ...more

To the best of my knowledge the 'Pinda Daanam' during the 10 days immediately after the death of a person is the most important and significant.
It is done under the traditional belief that the soul of the deceased remains in 'Preta' status during this period at the place of death and place of cremation of the body. During this 10 day period the Pretam is not totally detached from the worldly pleasures it enjoyed when it possessed a human body to enjoy the pleasures with. The Pindam offerings to the Preta during this period are prepared without salt or any taste or flavor enhancing addition so that the Preta gets fed up with the worldly life and leaves for Para Loka {other world} permanantly. In short, we do not want Pretas loitering around our houses.
The subsequent annual offerings of Pinda on the 'Thithi' {date calculated on the basis of Lunar calendar} of the deceased is to ensure that the Preta remains well fed with tastless flavourless food so that it does not develop the des ...more

The pind daan is performed by the people during the shradh so tht the anscestors get moksha or devine peace. It is repeated every year only tomake it doubly sure, if some mistake has occured inthe previous attempt. It is repreated also so that we remember the departed souls during this pious period of sharadh. It is also repeated so that the people of younger generation also watch and learn to respect the dead.

1 year of a dead person is equal to 1day of a living person. so when you perform the shraddha cermony which you r refering as pind daan it means u r feeding the dead members of your family every day. the merit is accumulated by you. the dead ancestors do not get moksha by this. they only get fed in whichever loka they go.
