Tejas is an advanced, lightweight, supersonic multirole fighter aircraft being developed by HAL. It is a tailless, compound delta wing design powered by a single engine. The project was originally known as the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). The sophisticated avionics and advanced composite structure specified caused some concern almost immediately, and the IAF expressed doubt that India possessed sufficient technological infrastructure to support such an ambitious project.
Tejas is constructed of aluminium-lithium alloys, carbon-fibre composites (CFC), and titanium-alloy steels. The Tejas employs CFC materials for up to 45% of its airframe by weight, including in the fuselage (doors and skins), wings (skin, spars and ribs), elevons, tailfin, rudder, airbrakes and landing gear doors.
