If you are talking about it from a strategic point of view, our No. 1 enemy will always remain China. It has all the more reasons than it had in 1962 to fear India. At that time, more than the need to take back what they claimed was their territory under Indian occupation, it was the need to check India and show its place. One must remember that, internationally India was taking the lead in the Non-Alignment movement and trying to do a balancing act between the warring cold war powers. This was a period when China was virtually under isolation with very few friends outside and not the economic giant it was now. The main purpose than was to maintain the dominance in the power equation in the Asian continent.

Nothing much has changed as far as China's strategic equation is concerned. The only difference was China launched the much needed economic growth path in 1978 under the then boss Deng Xiao Ping, something that took us another 16 years to realise that, in a changed world, econom ...more
