The festival of Halda is celebrated in Lahaul, & is something of a private welcoming of the New Year. Along the valleys of the Chandra & Bhaga rivers , a few members from each household of the villages stand with lit cedar twigs at a special place facing west , one that is selected by the Lamas. These slender , burning pieces of wood then form the first flames of a bonfire that will later be disbursed. The local Goddess of Wealth , Shiskar Apa, is worshipped amidst much fervour, and the exuberant dancing that occurs around the event continues for a few days.
It is celebrated in the month of Jan.

Ritual dances and an unbelievably rich imagery mark Lossar. This is celebrated in Buddhist areas throughout the state while Lahaul's monasteries have some of the most spectacular performances. On its eve, the stylized chhaam dance with elaborate costumes and masks, commemorate the assassination of the cruel Tibetan king, Langdarma of the 9th century. Often - though wrongly - called 'the devil dance', it symbolises the triumph of good over evil.
