MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more commonly referred to as MP3, is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio storage, as well as a de facto standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on digital audio players. MP3 is an audio-specific format that was designed by the Moving Picture Experts Group. The group was formed by several teams of engineers at Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen, Germany, AT&T-Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ, USA, Thomson-Brandt, and CCETT as well as others. It was approved as an ISO/IEC standard in 1991.

MP 3 is a short for MPEG 1 Audio layer 3 and it is a digital audio encoding format, It greatly reduces the amount of the data required to represent the audio recording and it uses a lossy compression algorithm, The sound quality of the MP3 dormat is very good and an ordinary listener can not differentiate MP3 file from the original uncompressed audio file, The lossy compression algorithm used is very effective and the size of the compressed audio file is only 1/10th of the original uncompressed file, Perceptual audio coding is the underlying priciple used for creating MP3 files, This audio=specific format named MP3 was designed by the Motion Picture Experts Group
