Humilty or modesty is an ornament for knowledge. This is said in context to what we usually see, that people with knowledge consider themselves superior to others and behave arrogantly. Therefore it is said that with knowledge if a person is also humble or modest, it adds to his status.
A man of great knowledge would say that when he had no knowledge and was a duffer, he used to walk like an arrogant elephant. Then, gradually as knowledge started seeping in, he became more and more modest in his disposition towards others.
