A Financial Planner is someone who will help with the following.

1) Help you identify your financial goals. (Retirement, Children's Education,etc).
2) Come up with a investment plan to meet all your financial goals. (How much do you need to invest on a periodic basis to meet your identified financial goals).
3) Advises you on where to invest based on your risk profile. Helps diversify your investments.
4) Periodically keeps track of your portfolio to check if your investments are on track to meet your financial goals. If not, advises changes to your investment plan to help you meet your financial goals.
5) Helps with Portfolio Rebalancing to reduce your risk with time.

In US, Financial Planners charge a consultancy fee for their services. Hence they give unbiased advise as to which investment is the best to meet their needs. A Financial Planner is a specialisied professional who is certified by the FPSB (Financial Planning Standards Board, India) to provide unbiased financial advices and services to an individual.
