Yes. Unless you have the contrast you cannot evaluate the extent of any attribute. Had you not had Evil, there would not have been any value of Good. You cannot compare White with White unless there is a shade difference. "Bhala usaki kameez meri kameez se jyada safed kaise", this comparison calls for existence of a bright white and a dirty white. The point is, the nature has given Coupled sets of charecteristics in our body. Our hypothalamus has got a reciprocal functioning set of Nucleii. If one is for Rage the other is for Fear. There is one for Hunger and another for Satiety. Same is for Pain and Pleasure and so on. We are sliding between this scale of extremes perceiving different gradations and based upon them body actions are altered to ensure our Safety and Survival.

The entire Universe comes with the concept of duality. You go through pleasure and pain. That's law of nature. Here are a few quotes which will give you an in depth meaning. 1) First Quote :- Pleasure and pain , Gain and loss , Victory and defeat... Are all one. and the same. poise your mind in Tranquility. ( Bhagavadgita ).... 2) Second Quote :- After joy, sorrow, after sorrow joy, After day, night, and after night the day. Ceaseless rotate they on the Wheel of life. O'er and between the two broods peace always. ( The Mahabharata) ...3) Third Quote :- Yin and Yang, male and female, strong and weak, rigid and tender, heaven and earth, sun and moon, thunder and lightning, wind and rain, cold and warmth, good and evil, high and low, righteousness and humaneness,.....the interplay of the Opposite Principles constitutes the Universe. ........ Dont you think, the Universe is tumba complicated ? :))

Can one relish pleasure all the time if it does not precede or follow pain? It is the pain that makes us appreciate pleasure.

Unless one has experienced pain he would not know what pleasure is and it is also true otherwise. The pain purifies us spiritually. Pleasure on the other hand does just the opposite. The things, which give us pleasure also lead us to the condition of moral depravity. One wants to have sex for the sake of pleasure. One wants to drink and smoke for the same reason. The list is endless. Both we must experience in moderation. Excess of both is bad for our well being. It ought to be therefore balanced.
