Massive hydel projects are facing big protests from social activists like Akhil Gogoi; medha Patker etc. The main reason is environmental degradation caused by big dam projects. Although capacity and power production sounds good; the dams actually cause massive environmental degradation like increase in salinity of water and cause harm to forest areas...In a way it is good that we do not aim for such dams. NHPC is facing huge protests in Subansiri river of Assam ...I went there in 2011 and came to know abt it from locals..the Team Anna is helping the locals in protesting...Even some experts say that water level of Brahmaputra has changed in some parts of Arunachal which is a clear indication of building dams in Chinese part of the river and our govt. is sitting mute and blind to such illegal acts by a neighbouring country at border.
