Q.

This is about lotteries run by the state governments. Of course it is gambling. But it provides job for many; also some of the state governments declare that the earnings from the lotteries will be used for charitable causes and for specific development purposes. Therefore do you think it is good for the state governments to run lotteries?

No, its not good as the public losses their hard earned money through such gambling on lotteries which can be put to good use if they save it for their future. As far as employment generation is concerned those in the lottery business can be employed elsewhere where they can earn similar or better by introducing an employment scheme for them. This nuisance should end to make things better as many households have been ruined due to such gambling on lotteries leading to suicide being committed by the bread earner leaving the family bereft in despair!!

I hail from Kerala. The Kerala Govt is conducting a lot of lotteries, every week. One Lottery "karunya" is exclusively run for giving aid to patients who are terminally ill or need prolonged , expensive treatments. The Kerala Govt has also roped in a film celebrity as the ambassador for this particular lottery.
Lottery is just another form of gambling. The State's police force come down ruthlessly on all gambling dens and book the offenders under the relevant provisions of the law. But lottery is a legalised gambling here, perhaps the only one of its kind. The reason is that it provides employment opportunities to many and also returns heavy profits. Lottery is perhaps the only profitable venture of the State Govt.
But this stirs up a grave moral question. The success of the lottery is dependent on the gambling mentality of the people. Just like spending the entire wages on liquor, there are persons addicted to lottery gambling also. So far as the household of ...more

There can be so many such things which may bring money. But my view is, whatever is not good, should not be brought just because it fetches money.

Itz a lame reason. If it provides job for 100, it steals money from 1000. The case is same with liquor and Cigarette.

If they want gambling, liquor and all to generate the revenue to Govt., let them have it, but no hypocracy about please.
