Q.

Jammu and Kashmir was never a part of Pakistan, it was always an independent state. Ideally it should have become a part of India like all other independent state. Why Pakistan is so much overenthusiastic to own this state?

The Kashmirians were traditionally a volk run by artisan industry, and communities like the Pundiths would take their products to all corners of the land. The thing is the creation of India and Pakistan destroyed the natural way of life in Kashmir.

The Kashmir state relied on a state as a sort of Italy in present day fashion as far as India and Asia went. Kashmir artisan industry was legendary and drew people from as diverse as Mongolia and Europe for patronage. But then, MUCH of the trade transited from Kashmir to Bandar Abbas area / Tehran via Balochistan. The "Sri Nagar" principality (J and K in India) was principally known for the finishing works and detailing.

When Pakistan was formed several things happened to Kashmir. Pakistan suddenly became a hostile border. So not only was a valuable source of raw materials lost for Kashmirian artisan industry but also vital commerce routes which took Kashmiri artisan to worldwide fame, was suddenly choked 'coz no mo' land travel via ...more

Why only J & K? Was it a necessity to have two independent Nations at the cost of life of People.
Leaders are always busy in sharing the CAKE, they always leave a bone of contention for general people......Had there be no J & K problem alive then how both India & Pakistan can divert the vision of the people from other important things that were to be done..............Long live conspiracy..............

I think our political leaders made a strategic miscalculation at the time of independence to give the freedom of choice to the then ruler of J and K to decide what he would like to do for his own state after the British had left. The Instrument of accession was signed only when the Pakistanis marauders came pouring through the Uri sector almost overunning Srinagar.

Pakistan had no natural claim to J and K as a muslim state that should automatically go to their side because J and K was a multi-religious state comprising of the majority muslims in the valley only, the Buddhists in the Ladakh region and the hindu majority in the Jammu region, just as many other princely Indian States which were amalgamated to the Indian Union. India should have clearly stated that J and K is part of our set up after partition, moved our forces to protect the border and pre-empted the Pakistani incursion. But how could he have done that, with people like Gandhi and Nehru singing tunes of diplomacy agai ...more

Because it is a Muslim majority State. And the Jehadi communal elements there have spread their poison of seperatism, in connivance with the same elements in Pakistan. Most minority Hindu Kashmiri's have had to flee their terror tactics, and are still living in refugee camps in Jammu and Delhi.
Refugee's in their own country. This is the pride that our government takes in handling the issue; by allowing it to remain as a festering wound, instead of having taken surgical strikes, way back in 1971, when the opportunity was there.
This is the parasdox of Islamic States. Where in majority, driveout or convert the minority. When in minority, viciously fight for equal Rights.

J& K was an independant state but later wanted to merge with India.JL Nehru wanted a plebicite and if it is conducted or was conducted the Muslim population there is in majority.Hence it could go to Pakistan. Moreover it is one of the most beautiful lands and adjoining Pakistan. Also greed knows no reasoning. The majority of Muslims is also there.I suppose all these reasons are the cause for Pakistan wanting to own its stake.
