I consider Abhinav Bindra as the best sportman in India. He is the first Indian to win a gold medal in 10mt air rifle shooting in Beijing Olympic games 2008. He made India proud by making it clinch to its first ever individual Olympic gold medal in 108 years

I'd say "The Great Gama" , or Gulam Muhammed. That's because he was the first Indian to become the world champion in any sporting event, which is wrestling. And he DECIMATED his opponents There was no rich pro sports arena when Gulam was in the scene, so he never got the publicity he deserved. The way he dominated Stanislaus Zbyszko a world champ in his own right was unbelievable.
