It is of Latin origin; it comes from the word scientia, which means knowledge. It didn't acquire its modern meaning of evidence-based research into the physical world until the 18th century. Before that, people who studied such areas were known as natural philosophers, and were sometimes thought of as very close to magicians. Anonymous
