More than three decades ago, India also experienced excesses of emergency when the then Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi had ordered imposition of emergency in the same way what now Mr. Musharaf is doing in Pakistan.
Smt. Gandhi could never tolerate any voice against her. She never hesitated in expelling in even prominent and VIP minister from her cabinet. After her defeat in the election petition filed by her opponent Raj Narayan she lost her mental balance and decided to teach opposition a lesson. In the first morning after imposition of emergency all opposition leaders throughout the country were taken into custody and they remained in jail as long as emergency was in force. All fundamental rights provided in the Constitution were suspended. Even the basis structure of the Constitution was altered through 42nd Amendment. And she did what was not normally supposed to happen in a civilized society.
