He got the support of the people who knew about the strike. But as he failed to catch the eyes of the media, many of us could not know about him.The media has a very big role (as has been seen in case of Anna n Baba) in bringing support for people like Swami Nigamananda.

Because he was a Sadhu not a high profile BABA ......... Diya ke niche andhera hota hai ......... we (politicians ) are thinking about , what others (other party) are doing ...... and it is in the news that he was poised by the hospital authority as instructed by the CM of the state(Uttaranchal) ..........

Because of a simple reason media did not bring him to center stage , Media focuses on what sells and not on what bears merit.
If suppose Nigamanand was a rock star with fan following spanning across half of India they would have rushed to gather sound bites on day 2 and splash exclusive stories on their channels.

Though people criticize Ramdev but his methods of arranging protest in style in grand manner and feeding media is the only workable solution in today's world.
