Lack of leadership had lad to failure of 1857 revolt. Though instantly names like Mangal pandey, luxmibai, tantaya tope come to mind

The saddest part is that there was no unity of command .... It was a rudderless move wherein even the soldiers from only erstwhile Bengal Army, that constituted recruits from mostly Eastern UP and BIhar were constituents took part. The then Bombay Army, Madras Army, Gurkhas and Sikhs remained in allegience to British interests .....
