Death in Indian society turns out to be a very costly affair for the decendants of the dead person. The pundits spare no opportunity to suck the last rupee out of their pocket in the name of different customs and donations, to bless the dead. And after that the meal to all the relatives & friends.People realize they are being fleeced but cannot protest and suffer badly. Can we not change the customs so that the kin of the dead are not subjected to a serious bankruptcy and mental tension? No offence meant to anyone's religious feelings!
It is really most unfortunate that people think like they are in 16th century, when they tried to hang Copernicus and likes of Galileo for telling the truth. Premchand, decades earlier wrote in details about these maladies in our society. I hope we all have read Godan and umpteen number of stories in his Mansarovar collection where he exposed these Ponga Pundits. Being a Doctor, with full scientific temparaments, I myself feel helpless when I see near dears arguing adamantly on such practices in the name of our great traditions and culture, knowing fully that this is merely filling the kitty of unscrupulous elements. Let us see reason, realise the Truth and behave rationally, then only we can hope some change. Thanks for a very good question on such important issue.

In capitalistic world everyone has right to earn money.
We can't object either a doctor nor a priest in this mad race.
We better suffer in silence.
After all, custom is our own creation.
Sorry.

Yes u are right especially in Hindus I have seen many families borrowing money from money lender for death ceromonies at very high interest rates but it is written in shastras if u feed one cow that is equalivent to feeding 100 ppl so instead of feeding pandit and relatives it is better to donate money to some orphanage or old age home I think it will more punya than performing any yagna or feeding 100 brahmins

Those who believe in the blessings and SADGATI of the ancestors perform all sort of rituals. No pandit knocks at our doors to compel us to do. What ever is your budget you can do it. More than pandits, it is a social custom to offer meals. Pandits only perform rituals in Allahabad or at any other sacred confluence after the remnants of the deceased persons ashes are washed.
