Q.

The "Evil Eye" is one of the most widely believed superstitions in India - to ward off the effects, most Indian Shops and houses use this mask over their doorways/entrances.

Do you also believe in existence of 'Evil Eyes' or Buri Nazar ?

'Buri nazar wala, tumhara munh kala' - I read this on the back on the lorries many times. I also see lemons and chillies in the form of garland hanging in front of some shops, cars etc. I also saw small doll/puppet like things hanging on some shops. On questioning what for these things are put up, I was told 'to ward off evil eye'.
People believe that certain persons have 'evil eye'. There is an old lady in my place. People say that she has evil eye. So much so that certain people, when they go out of their home for some good work, if they see her, they come back home and go again the other side. I am told, she is number one in evil eye.
I am not able to understand this but even in a scientifically managed poultry, I saw some chillies/lemons etc. Even some renowned scientists believe in evil eye.
I do not believe but I remember when I was young and when I fell sick, my grandmother used to take a little salt around my head and throw it in the fire. She believed in 'buri naza ...more
