W Shakepeare and O Wilde are the best remembered ones, though in terms of selling, Agatha Christie, E S Gardner and PG Wodehouse might be in the front. In terms of literary relevance, I would say its M Proust, Kafka, J Joyce and F Dostoyevesky. Only Joyce wrote in English, tho.

There are a number of works that can be considered as the best and if somebody really wants to pursue his career in English literature, he can peruse these books. The one book that is compelling me to write its name is 'A Passage To India' by E.M Forster. If you analyze every word of the masterpiece, you will come to know what literature is and what kind of genius E.M Forster was.

There are some other works also that are considered in the category of the best and a few names include Moby Dick by Herman Melville and recently published Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts.
