Train journey: You need to lock only fewer bags and also provide space for other passengers too to keep their luggage. You can also carry most of your bags yourself if they are fewer, and save on time and coolie charges.
Bus journey: Most people keep their bags overhead, if they are small and so can get off the bus quickly.
Air journey: Lesser the bags, lesser the charges for extra baggage and shorter the waiting fime for collecing your luggage from the airport.
These factors make sense since a journey is a composite one, starting from the time you check in and the time you leave your destination point.
