It is just like a drop in the ocean n will have little impact on population growth. However, creation of awareness about the demerits of more children may have some effect.

I do not think it has risen only thing is you are seeing more due to media , Bibelic stories have mention of Sodom ( Sodomy word is derrived from this) and Sappho though just to condemn but it proves it was existing and widespread enough to be condemned by people who abhored.
Hadith talk of same issues and some Koranic verses talks of 72 Vegins , Unlimited slave girls and young boys in heaven so definately it existed in middle east.
Hindu scriptures simply ignore this aspect and it is mentioned only in sex manuals such as Kam sutra so it was not so prevalent culturally here but existed.
