Though Ajmal Kasab has been sentenced to death, it is anybodys guess when the death sentence would be carried out. Many avenues like an appeal to the Supreme Court and mercy petition to the president are still open to a 'killing machine' like Kasab, as rightly termed by special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. Though the death verdict is seen as a fitting reply to the perpetrators of law, but the real question arises- will Kasab be really hanged? Or are we in for another game of hide-and-seek played by our politicians to delay justice- as has been the case in Afzal Guru's verdict? The hurdle doesn't end there. The real game begins when our governance and political outfits come into the picture. All the hard work done by the prosecutors, police and witnesses would go for a swing, if our politicians, as usual, try to gain mileage from such a sensitive case. Going by the nature of crime he committed, his sentence must be expedited, but our judiciary system is such that it gives a lot of opportunities to the death convict, because ours, is the biggest democracy in the world...!
