I know that my Aunts eldest married daughter lighted the funeral pyre when my uncle expired few years back .

As per Hindu laws it is not correct.

It is to be decided by Religious Leaders.

Yes, even if she has a brother. It is being practiced nowadays. 4get the tradition or whatever u call it. After all what will happen if a girl/woman enters a crematorium? The dead is not going to object.

Actually, most of the usual religious and traditional chores never recognize the role of the women as the principal characters. So is true for funeral pyre. It is purported to be on the logic that married daughters belong to other families. They make difference between daughters and daughters - in - laws. Moreover such a harsh scene cannot be endured by women. But, days are changing, women are taking lot of responsibilities, they have also become quite tough mentally. Why not recognize their roles?

I don't know who daughter would love to do it? Normally the custom is for any close male relative would do it and it is alright. As such if a daughter wants to do, she should be allowed.
